MAY 2026

Joint North-East counterterrorism gains offset by contested Zamfara airstrikes and Oyo school abductions

National Overview

Nigeria's security picture in May 2026 was shaped by joint Nigerian-U.S. counterterrorism operations against ISIS/ISWAP in the Lake Chad Basin, contested military airstrikes causing mass civilian casualties in Zamfara and Niger, and the alarming southward migration of mass-abduction tactics into Oyo State, set against an overall decline in recorded fatalities from the prior month.

  • Joint counterterrorism offensive in the North-East. Joint Nigerian and U.S. forces conducted airstrikes against ISIS/ISWAP compounds in the Lake Chad Basin, including around Metele in Borno, with multiple overlapping reports (May 16, 19 and 25) describing roughly 175 fighters and senior commanders killed in what appears to be the same operation. Troops repelled an ISWAP assault on a military camp at Gonori, Borno, neutralising over 50 attackers, and rescued 92 civilians abducted by Boko Haram along the Buratai–Kamuya road near Biu, Borno. Despite these gains, Boko Haram beheaded five of 416 captives held in Ngoshe, Gwoza LGA, after an escape attempt, and Chadian airstrikes in the Lake Chad region killed dozens of Nigerian fishermen.
  • Mass-casualty military airstrikes draw scrutiny. A military airstrike on Tumfa market in Zurmi LGA, Zamfara killed at least 117 people, while a separate report describes a strike at Tumfa village, Shinkafi LGA killing 100 civilians; the United Nations has called for investigation, and one ambiguous 'market' report suggests these figures may partly overlap rather than represent two wholly distinct events. In Niger State, a strike on Guradnayi village, Shiroro LGA killed at least 12 civilians during pursuit of armed men on motorcycles. Amnesty International also reported that 154 Fulani detainees died from disease and malnutrition in a military-controlled facility at Yikpata, Kwara State.
  • Mass school abductions reach the South-West. Armed groups, described in some reports as a Boko Haram faction, raided schools in Oriire LGA, Oyo State, near Ogbomoso, abducting 39 pupils and seven teachers and killing at least three people, with one teacher reportedly beheaded. The Federal Government dispatched a delegation to Ogbomoso following the attack. Comparable school abductions occurred at Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi, where the vice principal was killed and 25 students taken, marking a worrying expansion of the tactic beyond the North-West and North-East.
  • Banditry persists across the North-West. Bandits attacked Jikamshi market, Musawa LGA, Katsina, killing 24 traders, and struck Kiliya village, Dutsinma LGA, killing 16 during Eid-el-Kabir gatherings. Gunmen killed at least 30 in Zamfara and ambushed travellers on a Zamfara highway, killing 30. Operation FANSAN YAMMA and other troop operations rescued dozens of kidnap victims across Anka and Matazu LGAs.
  • Communal and cult violence in the Middle Belt and South-East. Plateau State recorded over 50 deaths in unspecified violence plus attacks on Angwan Rukuba, Jos North (30 killed) and Ngbra Zongo, Bassa. In Niger State, a militia backed by Beninese vigilantes killed 41 ethnic Fulani herders at Kabe, Borgu LGA, accused of being Ansaru informants. Benue saw cult killings in Makurdi, while a suspected serial killer confessed to roughly 30 murders in Odukpani, Cross River.

All 37 states and the FCT recorded at least one incident this month; no states were entirely quiet.

Borno

60 INC744 KIA

DEC
MAY

Borno remained the epicentre of counterterrorism operations, with joint Nigerian-U.S. strikes reported to have killed around 175 ISIS/ISWAP fighters in the Lake Chad Basin even as Boko Haram beheaded captives in Gwoza and Chadian airstrikes killed Nigerian fishermen.

Joint Nigerian-U.S. counterterrorism strikes

Joint operations by Nigerian and U.S. forces in the North-East were reported across multiple dates (May 16, 19 and 25) to have eliminated roughly 175 ISIS/ISWAP fighters, including several top commanders and a senior ISIS leader, with strikes targeting compounds around Metele in the Lake Chad Basin. These overlapping accounts appear to describe the same operation rather than cumulative separate strikes, and the figure should be read as a single ~175-fatality engagement. Troops of the Joint Task Force separately repelled an ISWAP attack on a military camp at Gonori, neutralising over 50 attackers without loss of equipment.

Boko Haram atrocities and abductions

Boko Haram released video showing the beheading of five of 416 captives held at Ngoshe, Gwoza LGA, after they attempted to escape captivity. Operation HADIN KAI troops rescued 92 civilians abducted along the Buratai–Kamuya road near Biu, detonating three IEDs planted by fleeing insurgents.

Cross-border airstrike casualties

Chadian military airstrikes targeting Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region caused dozens of Nigerian fishermen to be feared dead, with many drowning as they fled the strikes — an incident the UN has urged be independently investigated.

Oyo

56 INC26 KIA

DEC
MAY

Oyo State recorded a sharp escalation as armed groups carried out mass school abductions in Oriire LGA near Ogbomoso, seizing dozens of pupils and teachers and killing at least three, marking the spread of North-East tactics to the South-West.

Mass school abductions in Oriire LGA

Armed militants, described in some reports as a Boko Haram faction, attacked schools in Oriire LGA around Ogbomoso on May 15, abducting at least 39 pupils and seven teachers and killing three adults during the raid. Subsequent reporting indicated as many as 46 to 50 victims, including a two-year-old toddler, taken from Baptist Nursery and Primary Schools and the communities of Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota.

Killings and federal response

One teacher abducted from the Esiele community was later confirmed killed by captors, and a vice principal was reportedly beheaded in a terrorist den. A Federal Government delegation arrived in Ogbomoso following the abductions, while the Defence Headquarters insisted the attacks did not indicate a permanent terrorist presence in the South-West.

Plateau

48 INC164 KIA

DEC
MAY

Plateau State saw sustained communal violence, with over 50 deaths in unspecified attacks and further raids on Jos North, Bassa and Barkin Ladi communities, though both incidents and fatalities declined steeply from April's surge.

Mass killings and community raids

Violence across the state killed over 50 citizens during the month, while bandits attacked the Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North, killing more than 30 people and prompting a curfew relaxation afterwards. Gunmen struck Ngbra Zongo in Bassa LGA, killing 13 and injuring many others.

Barkin Ladi and Riyom attacks

Suspected Fulani bandits raided Barkin Ladi and Bassa LGAs, killing over 10 and prompting bans on night mining and grazing. Attacks on the Nding Susut/Sesu community killed five to six residents, while separate incidents in Riyom and Pankshin LGAs left four dead and several injured, and a raid on Fan District, Barkin Ladi killed five civilians.

Katsina

48 INC150 KIA

DEC
MAY

Katsina experienced intensifying banditry, with market and village raids in Musawa, Dutsinma and Kankia LGAs killing scores, even as security operations rescued kidnap victims in Matazu.

Market and village massacres

Bandits attacked Jikamshi market in Musawa LGA as traders closed for the day, killing 24, and raided Kiliya village in Dutsinma LGA, killing at least 16 residents gathered for Eid-el-Kabir and triggering mass displacement. Reprisal and coordinated attacks in Kankia and Matazu LGAs killed a further 16, 12 and 11 community members respectively.

Security operations and rescues

Security operatives killed five suspected bandits and rescued 32 kidnap victims in coordinated operations across Matazu, Musawa, Kankia and Charanchi, targeting a notorious bandit leader's camp. A separate offensive in Dikawa village, Matazu LGA, rescued another 32 victims and neutralised two terrorists.

Zamfara

42 INC402 KIA

DEC
MAY

Zamfara recorded one of the month's highest state fatality tolls, driven by military airstrikes on Tumfa — at least 117 killed in Zurmi LGA and a reported 100 in Shinkafi LGA, figures that may partly overlap — alongside sustained bandit attacks, prompting UN calls for investigation.

Contested military airstrikes

A military airstrike on Tumfa market in Zurmi LGA killed at least 117 people, including civilians and bandits, while a separate report described a strike on Tumfa village in Shinkafi LGA killing 100 civilians. One ambiguous account citing a single 'market' strike suggests these figures may describe overlapping rather than wholly distinct events, and they should not be summed into a confirmed combined toll. Both reports drew United Nations calls for independent investigation amid concern over civilian casualties.

Banditry and highway ambushes

Gunmen killed at least 30 people in attacks across the state, and a highway ambush on travellers killed a further 30. Armed men killed 10 vigilantes defending Damri town in Bakura LGA, while broader attacks across Zamfara, Plateau and Benue left 42 dead.

Rescue operations

Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA rescued 31 kidnap victims and killed five terrorists during air and ground assaults on camps, while a patrol along the Bagega–Kawaye road in Anka LGA rescued another 31 victims who had escaped during an airstrike.

Niger

28 INC180 KIA

DEC
MAY

Niger State deteriorated sharply, with airstrikes in Shiroro killing both bandits and civilians, a militia raid killing 41 Fulani herders in Borgu, and recurring communal clashes in Rafi and Gbako LGAs.

Two overlapping reports describe the same confession and the same ~30 victims, which should be counted once rather than aggregated.

Waterway abductions and unrest

Suspected militants abducted 15 passengers on the Calabar–Oron waterway, prompting the Nigerian Navy to restrict movement. Two University of Cross River State students died during a Calabar protest over a fatal accident, amid claims of gunfire exchanged with police.
