JUNE 2026

US-Nigerian strikes degrade ISWAP in Borno as banditry escalates across the North-West

National Overview

June 2026 recorded 841 incidents and 1,852 fatalities nationally, with a concentration of state-led counter-terrorism operations in Borno alongside a sharp deterioration of banditry across Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna and Kebbi and sustained communal violence in Plateau.

  • US-Nigerian counter-terrorism operations in Borno. A joint US-Nigerian operation in Borno State killed a reported 199-200 ISWAP/ISIS fighters, including a high-ranking commander, in an action a US National Security Council official described as the largest single enemy neutralisation since 9/11; the 10 June (200) and 29 June (199) figures in the data appear to reference the same raid, which also yielded a large haul of electronic intelligence equipment. A separate AFRICOM-linked airstrike killed 21 ISWAP fighters in Arege, Kukawa LGA on 1 June, and troops of Operation Hadin Kai neutralised over 50 ISWAP militants, including a top commander, on 3 June.
  • Mass abductions and rescue operations in Borno. The Nigerian Army rescued 360 women and children abducted from Ngoshe community in Gwoza LGA, recovered from a JAS/Boko Haram stronghold in the Mandara Mountains. Six children died of starvation in captivity and two infants died during the rescue due to harsh terrain. The recovery reflects the continued holding of large numbers of civilian captives by insurgent factions in Borno.
  • Banditry surges across the North-West. In Zamfara State, bandits killed 93 and kidnapped 50 elderly men in a single attack on Gummi/Bukkuyum on 2 June, with further mass abductions of village elders during peace missions in Maradun LGA. In Sokoto State, repeated raids on Dangulbi in Tureta LGA killed dozens across successive attacks during Eid-el-Kabir. Sokoto added 21 incidents and 107 fatalities month-on-month, while Kaduna (+17/+89) and Kebbi (+14/+56) also worsened.
  • Communal violence in the Middle Belt. Plateau State recorded attacks on Kawel community in Bokkos LGA on 21-23 June, with overlapping reports totalling dozens killed by suspected Fulani militias. Earlier attacks struck Gwon-Ajang in Barkin Ladi LGA and a mining site in Jos South LGA. Kebbi recorded fatal farmer-herder clashes in Gulma, Argungu LGA, while Benue saw the killing of the state MACBAN chairman in Otukpo LGA after a peace meeting.
  • Southern kidnapping and cult violence. Kogi State recorded a cluster of abductions around Ayegunle-Igun in Kabba-Bunu LGA, including a school attack that killed a vice principal and a six-year-old. In Lagos State, Aiye Confraternity cult clashes killed several across Ikorodu, Ojo and Alimosho LGAs, while security forces dismantled trafficking syndicates in Badagry. Ogun State recorded fatal kidnapping ambushes on the Ijebu Ode-Benin Expressway and dredging-site attacks in Obafemi Owode LGA.

No states were entirely quiet this month; all monitored jurisdictions, including both FCT and the separately recorded Abuja Federal Capital Territory row, registered at least one incident.
